Ludovic Regnault is a French contemporary artist, architect by learning, and engenieer by practice. He express the idea of flight, by adressing a fundament of architecture : the defy of gravity. Like many builders from the past who spent lives to lift matter in the air, he engages himself in the play between mass and lightness. The freedom expressed by flight of matter expands to the flight of ideas : in a dialog between the artist and the viewer, logics are encoded into art and later retrieved when beeing watched carefully. It speaks about a magic that architecture possesses when it encourages us to question and understand the human and natural creations that surround us. Ludovic Regnault is engaged into research and scientific discourse. To create this art, he seeks minimalism in static scheme of structures to provide the lightest static equilibrium. He also focuses on minimalism in construction, to make each assembly invisible and reveal the global geometry. The sculptures he produces extend on a structural principle named tensegrity, where massive elements are not touching each other, beeing only connected by a network of cables. He reduces the amount of cables and generates the geometry in optimal dispositions to get its lightest forms that could ever be built. This website is treated the same way : the definition of every image is inspired by the artist's drawing technique using a few values of grey to discribe the subjects making it the lightest way to be described, putting the emphasis on form. In the following you will find a selection of his main artworks, presented during his shows under the name of Massive Lightness.
